  1. Jeep Daddy

I work in an office and no longer commute on public transportation. However, if I did, this would be even more useful to me than any in the past. Nevertheless, this is a great bag that suits me in the airport, the office and on vacation. It’s probably one of the best bags on the market today but it’s not quite perfect for me. I’ll list some of my impressions about it:1. At first, it’s very stiff and the zippers are difficult to operate. In time, this gets a lot better.2. At first the bag was very flat and hard to expand. This gets better over time.3. It’s difficult to get the placement of the bag right. Several of the reviews say that it takes a couple of weeks to get the sweet spot. It took a couple of days but I found it.4. The bag is definitely heavy duty. It weighs more than a typical backpack for laptops but that’s to be expected with a pack like this. The quality is first rate although a sleeve for your laptop is probably a good idea.5. The release buckle on the strap is great! When I wear it as designed (strap across my chest), it is definitely easy to take the pack off and put back on when I need to do it quickly.6. I was not prepared for the way you access the main compartment. The videos on YouTube always showed access from the side. I thought it would be just as easy to access this area from the top because of the way the zippers are configured. It isn’t. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s just something I had to get used to. My laptop stays clipped into one of the main sections. You can’t access it from the top. The front pouches are easily accessible from the top….the rear compartments are just different.7. The zipper locations on the front two compartments, (especially the top one), can cause you problems if they aren’t completely closed. I kept the pulls on the side and lost a coupe of items because they weren’t COMPLETELY closed. If you keep the zippers on the top, you’re more likely to water in the pockets when it rains. If you leave them at the side, they can easily be opened for the contents to fall out while it’s on your back. If you wear this pack on your back in crowds, make sure the zipper pulls are secured in the cord on the side!8. The versatility of the pack is phenomenal. It is easy to rearrange things when I go on vacation, get on a plane or go to the beach.9. I definitely had to get used to the single strap concept. I used the single strap on my laptop satchel and it wss OK, but this is significantly different. I wasn’t really prepared for how this felt at first.10. The flat front compartment is extremely helpful for keeping my passport and ID for the airport. I can “secure” the zipper pull with the snap so that I don’t accidentally lose something that important.11. This is really trivial but, the velcro (hook & loop) fields are a great way to express myself. Kind of like changing a bumper sticker every now and then.12. The ability to swivel the pack around to your lap is great when you’re in a taxi, in an airport or on a commuter bus/train. This alone makes the design special.13. The zipper pulls aren’t anything special and they will untie if you aren’t careful. I just took a little extra time and effort and did a couple of paracord cobra knots for all of them. They look and feel better anyway.I also decided to pick up a couple of accessory items to make the pack fit my needs a little better.1. The Janus Extension pouch slides all over the strap. I tried to use the extension buckle and it was just too long for the pack to be comfortable. (I’m 6’4″ tall and weigh 230 lbs) I finally ordered the 5″ TacTie straps and attached this to the top of the strap just above the buckle. Problem solved. This is really great for storing your cellphone and sunglasses because it’s easily accessible with one hand while wearing the pack.2. The lack of an admin section in the pack is a little frustrating. I picked up an EDC Pocket Organizer that fits in the lower front. It really adds to the functionality of the backpack. I’m surprised that Maxpedition didn’t provide this functionality in the lower front compartment. This is really pretty standard fare.I haven’t experienced an overloaded situation yet, although to be honest, I haven’t hiked with it for a 4-hour stretch either. I can appreciate the comments that say it could be easy to overload, and I can honestly say I haven’t done that yet. This is clearly not a three-day pack but more of a day-pack.The pack is the best I’ve had and will probably last far longer than any of it’s predecessors. That in itself is a bit of a downer because I won’t get to replace it with a new setup for several years! While I wish I’d spent the extra $10 for the Khaki color, I’m afraid it’ll start looking like hell far sooner than the Black. This is an expensive bag that gives you the quality that you pay for. It’s unrealistic to believe that Maxpedition can make the perfect pack that fits everyone’s needs. In my case, they made made a pack that met a lot of my needs and then provided me with the options to customize it to better fit my situation.

Had this bag for about 3 weeks now. Freakin’ awesome bag. Very well made. Zippers and pulls are all top notch. The straps and handles seem to be pretty tough. I’m able to throw everything I need for a 13 hour day at the office into this bag…well, except for my lunch, but who needs a chicken tikka flavored laptop? Not I. Now, back to the bag…ROOMY. Lots of room in what at first seems to be a not-so-large bag. This bag has several pockets, and quite a bit of room for knick knacks (in my case, laptop power supply, mouse, 2 portable HDDs, firewire cables, usb cables, audio interface, Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Monitor Headphones with Coiled Cable and Audioengine D1 24-bit digital-to-audio converter ), although I did add a Condor H2O Pouch (Bladder Not Included) to the side, so now I can carry my nalgene and my SmartShake – Version 2 Jay Cutler Limited Silver Edition – 27 oz. for after work gym time. The key clip is a nice feature and I also added a Maxpedition Janus Extensionto the front to hold the other essentials…wallet, phone, swiss army knife, etc. Obviously, I’m using the webbing to attach all this, and its pretty solid. Nothing that I’ve attached to the webbing is floppy or loose…its tight and very functional. If you are planning on using this bag for a laptop, I would recommend getting a separate protective slip case to add a little extra padding. That’s my only gripe about using it as a laptop bag…lack of padding on the bottom. But hey, nobody said it was designed as a laptop bag, so there’s that. On the weekends, this is ‘THE’ weekend happy-fun-time bag. Lots of room for everything we usually take on a quick day hike, and its at this point that the other strap comes in very handy. With a heavier load, you might have the bag trying to fly over your shoulder if you find yourself in a forward leaning position, but the other stabilizer strap works like a champ just as long as you don’t get too top-heavy and tighten it down properly for your particular body shape. Oh, and speaking of body shape, I’m a big guy (6’3″ 290 lbs), and this thing has plenty of room to tighten or loosen up. All in all, this is one awesome bag. I load it up and leave it by the door and all I have to do is grab and go the next day. It seems sturdy and is very practical. I would definitely recommend it to anyone needing a nice over shoulder E.D.C. or (impromptu) laptop bag.

Smaller than expected but seems durable
There is no question this bag is solidly built. Heavy nylon cloth, waterproofed, heavy duty zippers and decent straps and buckles. I admit I was expecting larger capacity for the bag to be my daily carry with laptop and basic computer tools. I was able to enhance the capacity adding external pouches to the molle straps which provided space for cell phones, multi tool, pens and headphones.I would not recommend this as a camping pack but a very decent day pack or commuter bag.Update: Coming up on 3 years using this bag on a pretty much daily basis. No appreciable wear anywhere on the material, seams or zippers. I have upgraded all the zipper pulls but, aside from that, the bag and accessories are still going strong. That’s 3 years to and from the office, dragged from site to site in the field and weekends and holidays. Maxpedition products all seem yo be super durable and well designed. I’m upgrading my rating from 4 stars to 5 simply because this bag is holding up better than anything I have ever owned.
